Rebecca Ruby wrote recently about the importance to nonprofit organizations of differentiating themselves, finding their “only-ness” (I think uniqueness is a better term). As often happens, I couldn’t help adapting Ruby’s formula for job-seekers (sorry it’s a little blurry; it didn’t reduce as well as I would have liked):

Well defined. It is also very important that employees are made and kept happy, especially the good ones. A couple of years back, I worked at this restaurant and we were taken over by other management. The new owners were so rude and treated us like total crap, our profits dropped by 60%. I couldn’t take it anymore, found myself another job and 7 months later, the restaurant closed down. So it is very important to treat your employees as you would expect them to treat you.
