Marjorie Lloyd is interested in survivor stories of people who have experienced mental illness and their careers. On Worldwide Story Work, she writes:
My research is on how to involve people more in their mental health care and consequent empowerment. There are few survivor stories in mental health, and so I keep finding myself drawn toward survivors of the holocaust and the slave trade, which leads me into the anti-psychiatry arena. However, my aim is to discover in these stories what keeps people going in the face of uncertainty and adversity rather than the horrors that they have experienced. I am familiar with Arthur Kleinman’s Illness Narratives, Georgina Wakefield and Arthur Frank’s work, but would appreciate any help in finding more survivor stories to support my narrative on service-user involvement.
I will add contact info for Marjorie when I have it. In the meantime, e-mail me if you’re interested in contributing.

i have a theory about mental illness. it is caused intentionally by the species to create a vast part of the population that is disoriented and consequently absorbs all the skull resonance of the misdirected comments of the normal people. in this way language is kept from escaping into the environment where other species might decode it and form a counter measure. any population has a distribution of individual susceptibility to dislodgement. all the species needs to do is set a condition with a precise threashold and the population will separate into a disoriented, mentally ill part, and a normal healthy part. you can read more about my theory at my blog, http://gettingyourbusiness.blogspot.com
the technorati.com tag cloud there, the mental illness tag, goes to this technorati.com page:

While I'm not sure I understand your theory, James, it's very interesting, and I thank you for sharing it.

PublishAmerica Presents A Blessing in Disguise by Tim Olen Pickett
Frederick, MD December 4, 2008 -- PublishAmerica is proud to present A Blessing in Disguise by Tim Olen Pickett of Veedersburg, Indiana.
We, as a human race, know very little about the mind and how it works. If A Blessing in Disguise can shed some light on the dark side of mankind, thinking disorders, and mental illness, there may be renewed energy to help ease the pain of millions now living, and millions yet to be.

Thirty years ago, a Doctor suggested that I try to write down my racing thoughts. After becoming severly ill a couple years ago, it was put in my heart to compile the years of confused thoughts into a book. There is something here for everyone, a true survivor's story.
Sincerely,
Tim Olen Pickett
A Blessing In Disguise
Thanks, Tim, for sharing this information. It comes at a time when my son is undergoing some very difficult mental-health issues. I would like to read your book for its insights.
Hi,
I have just stumbled across you blog. I have been a very active independent advocate and carer in mental health for many years. I have developed a global knowledge base for mental health which brings together information from the many stakeholders involved in mental health, such as Neuroscience, psychology, carers, survivors etc, plus also includes my own articles which highlight major issues in mental health care based on my analysis of my own 'field experiences' and discussions with others. Its at http://www.communities.mentalwakeup.com.
I am just starting to work on the survivor aspect to it, so at the moment its a bit light in that area at the moment, but am particularly looking for book, podcast and video references.
What you are doing is a very important thing, as there are many people who have survived despite the mental health systems and 'recovered' where they are doing very well in their lives without the need for crippling medications or with much lower doses/far less side effects. Neuroscience is finding a lot more about the mind/brain, but there is so much they just dont know as well. People need to know how these people survived and recovered, so others can learn from them - its critical research and information.
You might find the site a helpful resource to help in your research and it also points to many journal references and other sites that may help.
regards
Steve
Forgive me for taking so long to respond. I'm traveling across the country in an RV and have limited Internet access. Thanks for your kind words about the blog. I am in the process of checking out your site, and YOU are unquestionably doing the truly important work. Thanks so much for commenting.
