Stories, in fact, work well with most traditional interview questions. The current series of blog entries shows sample storied responses to typical interview questions.
My father and I have always shared a love for music. When I was young, he took me to see a famous classical guitar player. Before this concert, I had always viewed classical music as something boring that only my grandparents listened to. To see the guitarist fuse together jazz and classical with such virtuosity brought the music to life in a way I had never experienced before. This performance alone inspired me to engage in music studies. I started as a performance major in college but decided to switch to marketing. I love performing, but I would much rather reach the masses by promoting music on a larger scale - in hopes that many young listeners can discover their love of music as I did.
I have been fascinated with the visual components of firms - logo designs, branding, signs, packaging - since I was very, very young. A speaker who designed logos for a living spoke to my fourth-grade class. I was a tiny artist with big aspirations, and I loved how a small image was used to convey so much information.
I was introduced to marketing and entrepreneurship through my high-school club called DECA. I became vice president and participated in multiple national competitions, which contributed to my marketing knowledge. My college sales job gave me first-hand experience in relationship marketing and implementing a strategic plan to improve business throughout 15 Miami suburbs. From then on, I’ve devoted myself to understanding marketing and gaining knowledge on how to better apply new techniques to specific industries.
I knew I wanted to be a photographer since the first time I held my father’s camera. I was about 8 years old, and the camera was bigger than I was. He taught me how to use it, and we went out and took pictures of my horses. Later, we went to his darkroom and developed the pictures. After seeing the results, I knew that this was what I wanted to do with my life.
I knew that I wanted to pursue information systems technology about my sophomore year in college. It was then that I realized that my hobby, computers, was taking up most of my time. My favorite courses were IT courses. I also realized when I was doing computer-oriented work-study that I enjoyed it so much I would have done it for free.
